Besides, publication is the primary way that science is communicated, validated, and advanced. Its importance spans several key areas: “Visibility and Reputation”, “Scientific Impact”, “Peer Review and Quality Assurance”, “Collaboration Opportunities”, and “Institutional and Societal Value”.

In Finland, we use JUFO levels to group conferences and journals (See JUFO, https://jfp.csc.fi/jufoportal)

At BISG-Robotics, researchers are expected to publish their work in the following conferences and journals.

1. Conferences with JUFO levels and deadlines

You can check the recommended conferences here, https://bisg-robotics.github.io/jufo_deadline. Note that you are welcome to contact Bike Chen if you find good conferences but them are not in the website.

Here, the courses and books are suitable for the researchers who are interesting in Computer Vision, Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM), Deep Learning, Robotics, etc.

How can researchers improve themselves? Look at the figure above, researchers are “Agent”. “state” means knowledge in brains. “reward” shows achievements. “action” indicates practice. Reading books helps obtain knowledge (i.e., update “state”). At the same time, please apply the knowledge to applications (i.e., update “action”). Finally, the researchers will receive rewards, such as papers and decent jobs (i.e., update “reward”).

Professor Juha Röning, the leader of BISG group, retired by the end of 2025. BISG group organized a farewell party for Juha.

Today we bid farewell to Professor Juha Röning, a visionary leader, pioneering researcher, and inspiring colleague whose influence has shaped not only a research group, but an entire field.

As the head of the Biomimetics and Intelligent Systems Group, Professor Juha Röning cultivated an environment where curiosity met rigor and innovation met real-world impact. Under his guidance, BISG became internationally recognized for its multidisciplinary excellence across data analysis, robotics, secure programming, and Bio-IT. These were not merely academic pursuits—they were engines of transformation, improving industrial manufacturing, advancing Industry 4.0, strengthening health and wellbeing technologies, enabling environmental monitoring through mobile robotics, and securing the connected world of IoT and seamless artificial-natural systems.

Yet beyond the achievements and accolades stands the legacy that matters most: the people he mentored, the minds he inspired, and the collaborative spirit he fostered. His leadership style reminded us that great science is not only about intelligence, but about integrity, generosity, and vision.

Professor Juha Röning leaves behind a community stronger, wiser, and more ambitious because of his presence. While we say farewell to him in this role, his influence will continue to guide future discoveries, future researchers, and future breakthroughs.

Thank you, Juha, for your leadership, your wisdom, and your unwavering dedication. Your work will endure—in our research, in our innovations, and in the spirit of inquiry you instilled in us all.

SIX ManuGenius OULU

Congratulations to BISG-Robotics group for winning the European Structural and Investment Funds - European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

SIX ManuGenius OULU is a nationally coordinated research project focusing on the role of generative artificial intelligence in the digital and green transition of the manufacturing industry. The project aims to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) by providing research-based knowledge, practical pilots, and strategic roadmaps for the responsible adoption of generative AI technologies.

The project brings together universities, universities of applied sciences, development organizations, and industry partners across Finland to form a cross-regional collaboration network. Through applied research, pilot implementations, and close cooperation with companies, SIX ManuGenius OULU addresses both the opportunities and limitations of generative AI in manufacturing processes, supply chains, and supporting business functions.

The outcomes of the project include a national generative AI roadmap for manufacturing, validated pilot cases, scientific ublications, and a long-term collaboration framework aligned with the Sustainable Industry X (SIX) initiative and European Digital Innovation Hub (EDIH) principles.

The SIX ManuGenius project unites the research expertise of TAMK, TAU, JAMK, Savonia, Oulu University, Elinkeino-liikenne- ja ympäristökeskus, SeAMK, Into Seinäjoki and Business Tampere to build a comprehensive research and support framework for adopting generative AI in manufacturing SMEs. The project combines fundamental research on how generative AI works and where its limitations lie with applied research that helps companies implement AI solutions in practice. At the university of Oulu, the following research units participate: UBICOMP, BISG, and Industrial Engineering and Management.

Depth-Aware Range Image-Based Model for Point Cloud Segmentation

<!--
